Marvel Comics is making Thor a woman.  From Time Magazine:

TIME: How do you think this will impact fans who have been with the male version of Thor for such a long time?

Jason Aaron, writer of the Thor series: If you’re a long-time Thor fan you know there’s kind of a tradition from time to time of somebody else picking up that hammer. Beta Ray Bill was a horse-faced alien guy who picked up the hammer. At one point Thor was a frog. So I think if we can accept Thor as a frog and a horse-faced alien, we should be able to accept a woman being able to pick up that hammer and wield it for a while, which surprisingly we’ve never really seen before.

Time: Marvel Comics Writers Explain Why They’re Making Thor a Woman

WELL DONE, MARVEL! I’m saddened that they have to explain why they’re making Thor a woman, though. It’s not like they’d have to explain the existence of a male character.

Actually I’m (honestly) a little confused, and the examples Aaron sited don’t help.  Beta Ray Bill was a different character.  Frog Thor was the same character who currently wields the hammer, but in pog frog form.  I’m assuming this is more of the Beta Ray Bill/Thunderstrike variety of another worthy of lifting the hammer does so and not a matter of the character who currently wields it being changed.  If you follow me.  But while I approve of the non-sexist nomenclature (seriously, the “She-” can be retired any day), it makes it a little hard to keep straight, if this Thor and other Thor are separate characters….

I’m kinda curious about the mechanism in play, but seriously, this isn’t the most WTFery thing Marvel has done this month.  I can’t understand getting riled up about it.

Wait, wasn’t Frog!Thor actually a frog that found a chip off mjolnir and became Thor?

I’m pretty sure that Frog!Thor was actually son-o-Odin-Thor turned into a frog, by Loki (of course) if memory serves.  The issue of Thor collected in the Mutant Massacre TPB has fully-humanoid him hanging out in Central Park (I think? Ah, New Yorkers, I love how you assume the rest of the world knows your geography to the cobblestone) and carrying on a conversation with his former frog homies in Froglish or…whatever frogs speak….

But I’m operating on pure memory here, and we’ve established my mind is full of dark places light can no longer reach.

It’s probably worth noting that there are TWO frog!Thors, the classic story by Simonson where Loki turned Thor into a frog to get him out of the way, and he eventually found his way back to his powers.

And then in recent years they decided to have a frog find a chip of Mjolnir or something and gain the powers of Thor and join the Pet Avengers.  Canonicity is questionable, but he’s out there SOMEwhere.  And usually called Throg.

So, everyone’s right!
